“According to the NCAA rules,” the true freshman said via his Twitter account. “As a student-athlete, the only way I can speak with other schools and see who may offer the best preparation and development for my future career is by entering the portal.”
Williams left the door open for a return to Oklahoma, saying that it’s “definitely an option” as he begins the transfer process. Williams took over as the starting quarterback for Oklahoma midway through the season after original starter Spencer Rattler underwhelmed through the first six games. Rattler himself has since entered the transfer portal and committed to South Carolina in December.
Williams played in 11 games for Oklahoma in 2021, posting 1,916 passing yards and 21 passing touchdowns to go with just four interceptions. He also rushed for 442 yards and another six touchdowns. He cemented his spot as Oklahoma’s starter in the Red River Rivalry game against Texas, when he led the Sooners to a wild 55-48 comeback win.
Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione and head coach Brent Venables released a joint statement shortly after Williams’ announcement, saying that they will “continue to be engaged” with Williams.
