Sir Keir Starmer spoke of 'abuse' the MP had faced as he thanked him for his service
An Oldham MP has stepped down from Labour's shadow cabinet as he faces a 'testing' recovery from illness. Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham West and Royton, resigned from the position of shadow environment secretary this morning .
"The road to recovery has been testing and although I am better than I was, there is still some way to go. For the benefit of both my health and my family, the time is right to step back from the workload that comes with being in the Shadow Cabinet to enable me to contribute fully to the General Election campaign coming towards us and to serve my constituents in Oldham West and Royton.
Sir Keir thanked Mr McMahon for his service in the shadow cabinet after receiving the letter from his colleague. He also alluded to 'abuse' and 'violent threats' the Oldham MP had received while carrying out his work.
