After a three-year hiatus from club coaching, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been named the new manager of Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas. The former Manchester United boss replaces Giovanni van Bronckhorst and has signed a contract until the end of the 2025-2026 season, with an option for an extension.
Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer , who has been out of a club coaching job for more than three years, has been appointed coach of Besiktas , the Turkish side announced on Saturday. The 51-year-old Norwegian, who was axed by United in November 2021, takes over from Dutch coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst who was sacked by Besiktas at the end of November.
Besiktas revealed the signing of a contract with Solskjaer, which is set to last until the end of the 2025-2026 season, with an option for the 2026-2027 season. Solskjaer's illustrious career at Manchester United saw him make over 200 appearances as a striker and become a key member of their historic treble-winning squad in 1998-99. His legendary status was cemented when he scored the winning goal against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final. Following his playing days, Solskjaer transitioned into coaching, enjoying a successful spell with Norwegian side Molde before returning to Manchester United in 2018. After his departure from Old Trafford, he took on the role of a technical observer for UEFA. Besiktas currently occupies sixth place in the Turkish Super Lig, trailing leaders Galatasaray by 21 points and Fenerbahce, coached by Jose Mourinho, whom Solskjaer succeeded at Manchester United, by 12 points.
