“I would just encourage anybody else that’s struggling with the same thing to just be easy on themselves and take time — and it does take time.”

“I certainly was able to see how serious it was and that had I not been fully vaccinated how it probably could have taken me out — and maybe taken me to the hospital,” Kenworthy, 30, told TODAY. “I went to isolation in a hotel room by myself for nine days. It was actually pretty OK after that. That one night was really the worst of it.”

Kenworthy competed in the 2014 and 2018 Olympics for the United States, winning silver in 2014.

At first, he told himself to be patient. He had been sick for 10 days. So he decided to switch up his normal routines so he could train without feeling too overwhelmed. “I lowered the amount of intensity I was doing,” Kenworthy said. “I was like, “OK I’m just giving myself a break and hopefully everything will be fine when I get on snow.’”“It was incredibly frustrating,” he said. “I had a little bit of a bumpy road to this Olympics the whole way through, like I had a couple serious concussions and I had COVID and I had a knee surgery and I just feel like I haven’t been able to catch a break, so to speak.
