The Taekwondo champion says he feels 'a lot safer' when the boxer is with him but would have been concerned for her safety if she were present during the 2021 attack
Olympian Jack Woolley says he was glad champion boxer Kellie Harrington wasn’t there the night he was beaten by thugs – as he opens up about his disappointment with An Garda Siochana .
“I’m actually glad she wasn’t there for her own safety because if she’d reacted to it, you never know what could have happened. Like there were seven of us random people who didn’t know each other were attacked. And people were hit with bottles and you never know who has a knife. Jack added: “We actually had only been together two weeks when that happened to me and at the time he wasn’t actually ‘out’. But it’s something that inspired him to go into the guards and try and get a little bit of justice for other people who might be in a similar situation. Because unfortunately, no I didn’t get a follow-up like from the guards themselves.
He said: “I think I just said it at the start because I didn’t think it was going to happen but now that it is getting closer, I’m starting to panic. It’s not happening now. You never know, sooner rather than later, I think. I’m going back to Spain and my partner is starting the guards in Templemore in the middle of this year. So I’d like something to bond us a little bit more rather than being on opposite sides of the world.
“I think after week four, I just kind of clicked and I said I need to just enjoy this and try to get as much out of it as an experience rather than seeing that as a competition.
