However it has been confirmed that rowers Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy will have to explore a different route to glory after the Paris Games next year
The addition of five new sports to the Games in five years time - cricket, baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse and squash - has left boxing closer to the edge of expulsion by the International Olympic Council .
It will take the recently-formed body World Boxing receiving enough worldwide support from national associations - including Ireland's Irish Athletic Boxing Association , which recently voted narrowly in favour of remaining with the IBA - to persuade the IOC to change tack. It would be a massive blow for Irish medal hopes to lose boxing for the Games in five years' time - and beyond.
"We would have liked to get it announced a couple of weeks ago but the fact that it hasn’t means it is a waiting game as much as anything else.” One of the reasons stated for the IABA members' vote going against a move to World Boxing in the recent EGM - change required 75% in favour but the vote was 4% short - was unhappiness with the OFI for not fighting for the retention of some weight divisions at the Olympics.
