Sligo woman McSharry competes in the 100m breaststroke final after breaking her national record to record the second fastest time of the finalists
By Michael Scully Mona McSharry has a real chance of winning Ireland's first medal at these Olympic Games. And, in what could be a special night for Irish swimming, McSharry's roommate Ellen Walshe will compete in her first Olympic final - while Danielle Hill looks the extra gear that could put her into a semi-final. It is Walshe who will be first to return to the electric atmosphere of the La Defense Arena this evening when she competes in the 400m Individual Medley final at 7.
"It’s a bit of a shock," said Templeogue woman Walshe, who qualified after finishing fourth in her semi-final and will be in lane 1. She was ranked 16th coming into the Games and so making the final is a brilliant achievement. "I saw fourth on the board and I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know’, it’s just a waiting game," said Walshe. "I hadn’t seen the results from the heats before and once I saw it, it was such a relief.
