Firefighters say low base rates of pay mean they're having difficulty securing mortgages, which is in turn putting many people off joining the service

Trade union SIPTU claims on-call firefighters will start resigning if issues surrounding pay and conditions are not resolved.Firefighters say low base rates of pay mean they're having difficulty securing mortgages, which is in turn putting many people off joining the service.SIPTU says nine out of 10 new recruits left the fire service this year because they couldn't make a living while working on the job.

Outside of annual leave, crew members must stay within two-and-a-half kilometres of the station at all times.Brendan O'Brien from SIPTU said, “the only action that can save this vital community resource from disaster is that the Minister Darragh O’Brien and the Minister Paschal Donohoe, put their heads together and arrange for the allocation of sufficient funds.”

The Government has said it is committed to resolving the issue and hope both sides work to ensure the service is as good as it can be.
