Education Minister Norma Foley revealed the figures following questions from Sinn Féin TD Martin Kenny
Over 100 court summonses were issued to parents last year over their children’s attendance in school. Despite the high number of summonses, there was just one conviction, down from 38 the previous year.
If Tusla considers that a parent is failing to send their child to school, it must send the parent a School Attendance Notice. This warns that legal action will follow if the child does not attend school regularly. Tusla must make reasonable efforts to consult with the parents and the child, before sending the warning.
There was, however, only one conviction in 2023 in relation to children not attending school. This was down from 38 convictions in 2022. She said: “A School Attendance Notice is the first step in enforcing the law. When a school attendance notice is issued, the situation is monitored and the parent or guardian is given every opportunity to address the underlying issues.
