The incident took place at 10.30am on the Kurfürstendamm boulevard when a silver Renault Twingo swerved into a crowd then headed east, drove on to the pavement and crashed into a perfume shop window. The crash scene has been sealed off and is being examined by forensic investigators while the man is now being questioned. No details about his identity or age were available.
“We don’t know if it was an accident because of a medical emergency or a crime, that is what we are trying to clear up right now,” said Thilo Kalbitz, spokesman for the Berlin police. “The driver was detained by passersby then arrested by a police colleague who was on the scene.” Within minutes of the incident, 60 police and fire brigade units sealed off the Breitscheidplatz and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church, scene of the 2016 Christmas market attack that left 12 dead.
