A little bit of pop history
A portrait of John Lennon, created by his close friend and former bandmate Stuart Sutcliffe has gone up for sale in Chorley.
John Lennon and the artist met for the first time when they were both students at Liverpool College of Art. They shared a deep friendship as they lived together at a flat in Gambier Terrace in Liverpool, the PA News Agency reports.Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn said: “They inspired each other and they laughed, drank, painted and read together.” Sutcliffe played at the Beatles' residencies in Hamburg, West Germany, where he met photographer Astrid Kirchherr, who later became his fiancee.
In a room there, he set up a studio where he could paint undisturbed. Now, his painting of John Lennon will be offered at auction by Ulf Kruger, the business manager of Kirchherr, who died in 2020.
