The 51 year old had served over 20 years of a life sentence for the brutal murder of rival gang boss Kieran Keane as part of violent and vicious Limerick feud
One of Ireland's top gangsters was found dead in his cell at Mountjoy Prison this morning. Notorious killer David Stanners from Moyross in Limerick was unresponsive when warders opened his cell door.
Kieran Keane was found with his hands tied behind his back and had been tortured before he died. His heartbroken wife told the trial at the Central Criminal Court that his killers were " animals". Stanners was due to be freed from prison over the next couple of years. He was regarded as one of the ringleaders of the McCarthy/ Dundon gang and an extremely dangerous individual.
