In refusing calls to hand over to his independent adviser the power to trigger investigations into allegations against ministers, Sunak has proved so far that he’s no different from Johnson
The latest polls offer a clue as to why Sunak is so keen on Operation Poop Scoop. An Ipsos survey found his personal ratings have plummeted in the past month, with just 32 per cent of the public believing he has what it takes to be a good prime minister .
On Monday in Darlington, he said he acted quickly about Zahawi. “What you can hold me accountable for is ‘What did you do about it?’” he said. “What I did, as soon as I knew about the situation, was appoint somebody independent, looked at it, got the advice and then acted pretty decisively, because that’s what I think all of you deserve, from me and from the Government.”
Part of the problem is the PM acts as the sentencing judge, if not the jury, in cases of breaches of the Ministerial Code. Johnson’s refusal to sack Priti Patel, despite his ethics chief finding that her bullying of staff meant she was guilty of breaching the code, had a chilling effect on other civil servants who were suffering alleged bullying.
