Opinion: As the first woman to become governor of Baja California, I believe in women's empowerment [Opinion]
Women around the globe are celebrating International Women’s Day, which has its roots in labor organizing in the early 20th century and was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977. It puts a spotlight on the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world.
To rightfully fight this heinousness, we must empower ourselves. Empowerment will only arrive in the direction of independence: economic and social. Women cannot aspire for greater power if we don’t possess freedom, starting with freedom of choice; choosing our work-life, body, future and overall life.
The authorities and our legal system must provide and support policies that advocate gender equality, such as creating breastfeeding-safe spaces in government buildings. My friends, this is a day to raise our voices, make ourselves heard, make ourselves seen. To tell our communities that we are unwilling to have any of us perish, that we will not tolerate excuses nor look the other way while injustices against us prevail. We must realize that raising our voices today is as significant as not remaining silent tomorrow.
