" : The Chronicle editorial board, in struggling to suggest an appropriate manner for recognizing the attempted Jan. 6 coup, made tortured comparisons to historical reckoning with the Civil War. I have a simpler, more relevant comparison and suggestion: declare Jan. 6 Donald Trump Day. We already have a template from the British, who each year commemorate Guy Fawkes Day to note a similar insurrection that failed to upend their government. In 1605, Fawkes helped hatch the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament while in session. Its ultimate failure led to the ironically named holiday which is marked by bonfires, fireworks and other celebrations every Nov. 5.
The failure of Donald Trump's attempted coup should be no less"celebrated" every Jan. 6, not to lionize him, but to mockingly remind us all that no one man and his ilk can upend the rule of law by insurrection. The real irony is that Trump will think having a national day of remembrance and renewed resolve named for him is actually an honor.
