Opinion: Megadrought raises big alarm on fossil fuel use [Opinion]
” : Thank you for raising awareness of the ongoing megadrought caused in part by fossil fuel burning. For the western U.S., water scarcity will likely be the most damaging consequence of the climate emergency, rather than temperature per se.Thank you for the article on the current “megadrought” affecting San Diego and the Southwest. The Union-Tribune continues to keep a spotlight on those impacts of climate change posing the greatest threat to San Diegans.
Fortunately, putting a price on carbon emissions and rebating the proceeds to families will kick-start this transition, while actually benefiting most families and the economy as a whole.Right now the Senate is considering a price on carbon as part of the pending reconciliation bill . Write to Senators Feinstein and Padilla and tell them to pass a reconciliation bill that includes a price on carbon. And tell them to hurry; time is not on our side.
Two of my co-workers lost homes last year in wildfires exacerbated by the climate crisis. Water conservation can help us make it through the drought, but the only way out of the danger is to hasten the end of fossil fuel extraction. Living here for the long haul will require more than individual consumers making thoughtful choices like low-water landscaping.
Like any “tragedy of the commons,” the climate crisis requires collective action. A price on carbon, like the carbon fee and dividend in the Energy Innovation Act, is long overdue. With enough citizen pressure, this year’s reconciliation package may include such a policy.
