Opinion: SDG&E audit should lead to lower costs for consumers. But will it? [Opinion]

” : Auditing San Diego Gas & Electric, a natural monopoly, is a critical responsibility of the government. SDG&E’s price regulation by the California Public Utilities Commission implies that it should serve the public interest. When SDG&E tried to pass $379 million of its mistakes onto consumers after the 2007 fires, it was not serving the public. When one in four San Diegans cannot pay their utility bills and SDG&E still advocates for higher prices, it is failing the public.

A monopoly for a business with such high fixed costs is a critical cost-saving measure, but it feels as though SDG&E manages to skirt government regulation by continually lobbying for higher prices while hiding behind claims of its prioritization of renewable energy. This audit is essential to restore the balance of power between public interest and private business.

Hopefully, this audit fosters legislation that reduces energy costs for San Diegans, who continue to face the rapidly increasing cost of living.
