Opinion: Whether Tim Hortons decided to do anything with the data it got on app users seems less important than the fact that it could collect it at all. Our privacy is at stake — and it can't simply be bought off with a coffee and a doughnut. navalang
How much is your privacy worth? According to our venerable Canadian icon Tim Hortons, the answer is a coffee and a doughnut.
As the company itself notes, the allegations surrounding the invasion of privacy were not proven in a court of law, and in classic corporate-speak, Tim Hortons says the settlement is not an admission of any wrongdoing.. Tims clearly messed up here.
But the whole thing still rubs one the wrong way. Whether or not Tim Hortons decided to do anything with the data seems far less important than the fact that it could collect it in the first place. As with all new legislation, debate and criticism is necessary. But bills designed to protect privacy have a funny habit of getting watered down after corporate lobbying and other private interests have their say.
