Last year at this juncture and again today, a Chronicle article leads me to conclude that, not only is daylight savings a bad idea, even the concept of standard time is wrecking my health. I am told that my well-worn body’s sleep rhythms are aligned with the outside world through a biological clock. This yields a “synchrony” that must be very delicate, because when you change it, there’s a “circadian misalignment.

For 60-odd years, shifting to daylight savings has been my favorite day of the year. All that said, if we as a species and a society can’t deal with all the health issues associated with regulating and standardizing our wake-up times, then let’s throw out the clock altogether. Join me in my call to heed nature’s intention for us and simply follow the sun.

We do not need, as some have said, permanent DST. Just let our lives follow nature's natural rhythm instead of a forced change. DST needs to go away permanently.
