The PAC will meet on Thursday morning for the first time since the Brian Stanley controversy broke.
Sinn Féin has announced that it will propose Mairead Farrell as the new chairperson of the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee to replace Brian Stanley.
The Laois-Offaly TD sensationally quit Sinn Féin on Saturday as he argued that he was subjected to an inquiry akin to a “kangaroo court”. Sinn Féin has given information relating to a complaint and counter-complaint in the Stanley case to the Gardaí on Sunday. Ms Farrell must be proposed as chairperson of PAC at the Oireachtas Business Committee, which will meet after 11am on Thursday. Many members told the Irish Mirror that while Mr Stanley could technically come in to chair the meeting, it is very unlikely and it would be “very problematic”.A motion confirming Ms Farrell as the new PAC Chairman is likely to come in front of the Dáil next Tuesday but is very likely to be objected to by Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Labour Party.
“I’ve made it very clear that until Sinn Féin answer the questions that have been put to them in relation to the McMonagle affair, the Brian Stanley affair and the Niall Ó Donnghaile affair to my satisfaction and the satisfaction of the general public, I won’t be attending the PAC under the chairpersonship of a Sinn Féin member,” he said.
