A number of senior politicians lambasted the price of the Leinster House bike shed and called for “accountability” when it was established who had signed off on it
The chairman of the Office of Public Works will be hauled in front of the Oireachtas Commission next week to answer questions about the “deeply embarrassing” Leinster House bike shed.
As the Dáil returned for the first time after the summer break on Wednesday, Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl delayed the start of Leaders’ Questions to address the scandal. “As many of you will be aware, the Office of Public Works is the landlord of Leinster House and other historic buildings. In the recent past, they have done outstanding work on the restoration of Georgian Leinster House.“However, as chairman of the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission, I've asked the chairman of the OPW to attend our meeting next week, where he will have the opportunity to explain and to answer questions.
He added: “Whatever the findings of the OPW in this review, lessons must be and will be learned. There cannot be a repeat of such unwarranted and indefensible expenditure of taxpayers money.”
