Matthew Lillard says the original 1996 Scream cast felt like family when they were filming the first movie together. 'I will say that there are very few instances in my career now, 30 years in, that have replicated what we had on that movie.'

Scream star Mathew Lillard says that the cast of the original film felt like a family when they were on set together. The Scream franchise has been a horror staple ever since Wes Craven's first film was released back in 1996. Many fans claim that Scream revitalized the entire slasher genre, and the highly successful first entry went on to spawn four Scream sequels, all which cleverly deconstruct the traditional narrative of slasher/horror flicks with meta commentary.

Fans' interest in Scream was brought back to life this year when the fifth entry into the series, also called Scream, was released in theaters. It is the first film to be released in the Scream series in over ten years after Scream 4 debuted in 2011. It is also a film that many fans thought they would never see, as iconic horror filmmaker Wes Craven sadly passed away in 2015.

"You know, I will say that there are very few instances in my career now, 30 years in, that have replicated what we had on that movie. It was before technology, before phones, before Instagram and these social-media platforms. In between takes now, you’re seeing people lined up on phones, but back then, there was nothing other than each other. Because of the hours we worked and the way we worked, we were inseparable.

Interestingly, Lillard also mentioned that he felt "nobody was out trying to make an iconic movie" when filming the original Scream. Rather, the cast and production team were just trying to make the best movie possible, with no understanding of how it would launch a long-running franchise. Lillard claims that despite the cast being aware that they were making a horror movie "at a time when Wes Craven hadn't made a good horror movie in a long time," no one was ever jaded.

While the cast of Scream may not have been able to guess the impact of what they were involved in at the time, it is certainly hard to miss now. The Scream franchise has brought many fans together in a similar way to how the first film bonded its original cast: through a love of fun and scary movies. This can be seen in just how many fans flocked to see the newest Scream, which bodes well for how audiences will welcome a potential Scream 6.
