The Police Federation says the two officers, from different backgrounds, feel 'hurt and very let down'.

The Police Federation confirmed that the officers were from different faith communities, and different parts of the island of Ireland.

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster's Stephen Nolan Show, Mr Lindsay said the two officers had been responding to another call when they saw a number of people gathered on the road."I spoke to both of them separately and their recollection of events is almost identical," he said. "They didn't go storming into the middle of a crowd, they sought advice, they sought direction and they feel certainly let down in the situation they now find themselves in."In his apology for what happened, the chief constable said "the events that have taken place to not reflect the values of the Police Service of Northern Ireland".

"I would actually say that those two officers, from my conversations with them, are exactly what we want to see in the PSNI.
