Oscaar Isaac is good as the avatar for an Egyptian god in 'Moon Knight' on Disney+. Ethan Hawke is, too, as the villain. But May Calamawy steals it.
It’s tempting to say that the best thing about “Moon Knight,” a new six-episode limited Marvel series debuting on Disney+ on March 30, is its weirdness.
But May Calamawy slides right in and steals the series — when she’s in it, which isn’t always enough. This is Isaac’s show from the start, no question. But Calamawy, while not given nearly as much to do, is magnetic in every scene she does have — smart, strong and slightly less goofy than Isaac. Or does he? He is having trouble distinguishing his dreams from reality, he acknowledges. He also loses time — and on some occasions seems to black out for a few minutes, snapping back to consciousness to find slaughtered bad guys lying all around him.
When he’s really up against it, Marc can call on Khonshu for the Suit, and he becomes Moon Knight, who looks like a gussied-up mummy but has what appear to be supernatural powers. Steven/Marc spends a lot of the series arguing with himself about whether to make the call. There’s trouble afoot from Khonshu’s former avatar, Arthur Harrow .
