Speaking personally, these plans don’t fill me with joy. You see, for many years I was a criminal – a chronic, repeat offender. Or, to put it another way, for much of my adult life I struggled with addiction to two Class A drugs: heroin and crack. I committed the crime of buying these drugs thousands of times – every day for almost a decade.

I never got caught, for a simple reason that exposes just one problem with the Government’s plan: I’m white, and I look middle class. If I’d been black, it would undoubtedly have been a different story: even though higher rates of white than black people use drugs, it’s the latter who get arrested for it in vastly disproportionate numbers. Our current drugs policy and policing regime is, in other words,I didn’t want to be an addict.
