She also offered a confusing explanation for her support of the GOP-backed law that banned abortions after six weeks of pregnancy and set up a bounty system. Button says she supported the law because she is pro-life but wants the Texas Legislature to revise the law to include exceptions for rape and incest.
Although we find some of this confounding, Button, 68, also has quietly amassed some legislative wins and is an effective and consequential lawmaker. In previous sessions she backed efforts to overhaul the Texas Enterprise Fund, provided funding for high-end research at Texas universities and supported early childhood development legislation.
If reelected, Button says she plans to focus on improving public education, increasing access to quality affordable child care, strengthening women’s health care, and promoting jobs and economic growth. She favors using much of the state’s surplus to alleviate the pressure on local property taxpayers and to increase the state’s contribution to school funding.
Curl, 42, worked for the city of Dallas’ public works and aviation departments and the city manager’s office and lost a campaign for City Council to council member Cara Mendelsohn in 2021. Curl says she would fight for affordable health care and to increase the state’s contribution to local school district budgets. She also says the state hasn’t done enough to fix the power grid and harden it against potential cyberattacks.
Button is a steadfast conservative but has reached across the political aisle to forge compromise with Democrats on issues that must have bipartisan solutions. Button deserves another term.
