After a brief two-year presidency, Ohio University President Hugh Sherman is set to retire later this spring.
ATHENS — Despite the dreary, gray January afternoon in Athens, Ohio University President Hugh Sherman said the university's future is bright.
With limited time, Sherman set a three-fold agenda of priorities: increasing enrollment and admissions numbers, increasing student success, and setting the university up for long-term financial success. In all, 14,684 undergraduates and 2,194 graduate students enrolled at the main campus in Athens this academic year.
"Students are focused on their studies and they aren't always thinking about these extras they might need," Sherman said."But they're spending a lot of time and money to graduate, so we want them to be successful." That hard out meant that OU had a long runway over the last two years to find a new permanent president.
Sherman said he's biased from his own experiences running the university, but he said whoever the trustees select as OU's next president should understand the complexities of the role.
