The family said they were told by prosecutors that the man who allegedly killed high school student Moussa Fofanaagreed to a plea deal that will give him 15 years in prison.
Supporters and family members of Moussa Fofana, a Maplewood teenager shot and killed last year, are scheduled to hold a march Thursday to protest a reported plea deal in the case of his alleged murderer.. He was shot and killed at Underhill Sports Complex on the night of June 6, 2021, police said.
Hawa Fofana, Moussa’s mother, said the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office told her last month they struck a plea deal in the case that would give Hernandez 15 years in prison if he pleaded guilty. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office did not immediately respond to a request to comment.Richard Pompelio, one of the attorneys representing the Fofana family, said the prosecutor’s office confirmed to him they had reached a plea deal with the defendant about a week after telling Moussa Fofana’s mother.
Pompelio said he isn’t happy with the deal. “It was not done appropriately,” he said, adding that the prosecutor’s office didn’t notify him of the meeting with Fofana.Community members plan to march from Columbia High School to Maplewood Town Hall Thursday to protest the reported plea deal. Fofana said she plans to attend.
Family members, friends and supporters will gather outside the school at 5:30 p.m., organizers said. Maplewood’s mayor, Dean Dafis, and former mayor, Fred Profeta, are scheduled to speak. “This was an intentional murder. The penalty for intentional murder is 30 years to life,” Profeta said in a statement. “But the prosecutor has agreed to ask for a ridiculously low prison term of 15 years. The community is outraged.”
