The HSE reports a surge in flu cases, with over 1,000 people hospitalized across Ireland. The number of cases has been increasing rapidly in recent days, putting significant strain on the healthcare system.
Over 1,000 people were being treated for flu in hospitals across Ireland on Tuesday morning, as the HSE admitted that the number of people affected has been “increasing rapidly” in recent days. In a statement, the health service revealed that 1,017 people in total were being treated for flu on Tuesday morning, December 31, nearly double the number that were being treated on Christmas Eve last Tuesday, December 24.
The figure confirmed on Tuesday is an increase on the 984 hospitalisations with flu on Monday and 869 on Sunday as the HSE revealed that GPs, ambulances, emergency departments and inpatient services are all feeling the effects of respiratory illnesses, primarily flu, this festive season. Speaking on Tuesday, HSE CEO Bernard Gloster said that Monday, December 30 was the second-highest day of attendance at emergency departments throughout the country and that “there is no doubt that the system is under pressure” to cope. “We now have 1,017 people in hospital with flu,' Gloster said. “This morning, we had 322 people admitted and waiting on trolleys and they were being cared for in both hospital wards and in our EDs. All our staff and systems are responding and managing very well and even though we have improved on recent years, there is no doubt that the system is under pressure. “Our hospitals are operating infection prevention control measures and we ask everyone to help and co-operate, including with any visitor restrictions that may be in place. We know that can be difficult for families and loved ones, especially at this time of year, but we must protect our patients and prevent the spread of infections in hospitals and other healthcare setting
