The agency is dealing with a backlog following a surge of inquiries when the Birth Information and Tracing Act was enacted in October 2022
The Adoption Authority of Ireland has received more than 10,600 applications for birth certificates and information since the enactment of legislation enshrining the right of adopted people to know their origins just over a year ago.
A total of 276 matches were identified between people who were seeking to contact relatives, and 118 have already been put in touch with each other. Some 158 others are in the process of facilitation. “Unfortunately, it is not the case that there is one complete and easily accessible file per person waiting to be handed over to them,” he added.
