She confirmed that up to June 30, there had been 328 arrests as part of Operation Saul in 2024. Of these arrests, 541 charges were preferred against suspects and a further 72 summonses were issued. Some 45 referrals were made to the Garda Youth Diversion Programme and a further 22 persons were dealt with by way of Adult Caution.

In the first six months of 2024, the combined number of charges preferred and summonses issued was 613, marking an increase of 1,151% in the space of a year. Deputy Costello told the Irish Mirror that the figures proved the need for a dedicated transport police unit within An Garda Síochána. “We want people to move to public transport so we have to make it available and we have to make it safe. Eamon is working on the availability, so it is important that this works to make it safe.
