“My weight ballooned up to 19 stone this year and since I turned 40 I’ve found it harder to lose the weight like I used,” the Londoner said. “I’ve taken Ozempic for a month and lost nine pounds. “It’s about the cost. My GP wouldn’t prescribe me Ozempic, he said there was too much of a shortage and it wasn’t fair to people with diabetes. And I can’t afford to pay £180 to get it privately. There are risks but there are risks to me staying obese.”Currently, because Wegovy is only given via specialist weight management services, usually based in hospitals, there is he capacity to treat about 35,000 people at a time per year in England.
And, as with any medication, there can be side-effects and risks. The most common complaints are nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating and gas. Serious but rare adverse effects include thyroid cancer, pancreatitis — when the organ becomes inflamed – and kidney failure.
