The company said it is set to begin a consultation process with employees affected
The ferry provider said its planned closure of the route is set to come towards the end of 2023. P&O Ferries claims that the berth, managed by Peel Ports, is no longer available to the company and negotiations to extend its current lease or find an alternative have been unsuccessful.
P&O Ferries came in for criticism in March last year when the company controversially terminated the contracts of 800 workers with immediate effect. The move sparked large protests at the entrance to the Port of Liverpool. “Without agreement with the port owner to provide a berth in Liverpool, it is impossible for P&O Ferries to continue operating on this route. Extensive negotiations with the owner of our Liverpool site to extend our lease at the port or find an alternative site for our Liverpool-Dublin service to operate from have been unsuccessful.
The statement continued: “We are saddened by our forced withdrawal from this route, which will reduce competition and the choice of sailings available to customers on a crossing where there is currently only one alternative operator. The route, served by two P&O Ferries vessels making an overall 24 sailings a week, is principally used to transport freight between the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

Liverpool's Alexander-Arnold will 'hopefully be OK' after kick to ankleJurgen Klopp has confirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up an injury in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth but believes it is not serious. The Liverpool right-back was subbed off after 76 minutes after a challenge left him in some discomfort on his ankle. Alexander-Arnold hobbled out of the dugout on the final whistle without a boot on his left foot and with some strapping attached to the area of concern. Klopp said: “He got a kick and it’s pretty painful but as far as he felt it, it didn’t twist or anything, it was a kick. “That’s why we changed it. Hopefully he is okay.”...
