The nine candidates vying for the Republican nomination all participated in forums before a crowd of more than 750 people at the Pennsylvania Leadership Conference.
ByPennsylvania’s nine Republican gubernatorial candidates came before a large gathering of conservatives on Friday to make their case as to why they are the best candidate to face off against presumed Democratic nominee Josh Shapiro in the fall.
However, a fiery moment came in the final moments of the second panel when Gale called Mastriano “a total fraud,” drawing what sounded like an equal number of boos and applause from the crowd. During the hourlong conversations with each panel, Barletta, a former congressman, touted the name recognition and statewide grassroots network that he built from his 2018 unsuccessful U.S. Senate run against incumbent Bob Casey as giving him an advantage. He pointed out that even though he and Mastriano have not run a single TV ad, both have topped the polls as gubernatorial favorites.
Hart, an attorney, was critical of her four opponents – White, Barletta, Corman and McSwain – who established“If we’re hiding and we’re not answering the public’s questions then I’m not sure how we can ask them to trust us with solving the problems and working together to build the coalitions we need to be successful,” she said.
Gale, a county commissioner, said he would end prevailing wage on public works projects and would oppose legalizing recreational adult-use marijuana. But most of his fire power was aimed at Harrisburg politicians “who cater to labor and trade unions” for campaign funding. He said what distinguishes him is he is the only candidate who has “no allegiance to the Republican establishment swamp.”
