87-year-old Mary Gallagher was struck with a bullet when police say someone recklessly fired into the air.
Gallagher was struck while on her front stoop just after midnight in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Philadelphia. She told WPVI she suddenly felt a sharp pain on her shoulders, then went inside to remove her sweater to examine the injury. As she did, the bullet fell to the ground.
While the bullet didn’t remain lodged in the wound, thanks in part to her heavy sweater, Gallagher said that it felt as if she had been “hit with a brick or something.” She still required two stitches for her injury.Police believe that Gallagher was struck by one of two suspected celebratory gunfire incidents on the holiday. In another, a bullet went through a window on the 300 block of South 58th Street. No one was injured in the second incident.
Philadelphia sheriff Rochelle Bilal had put out a statement in the week prior to New Year’s Eve, warning that shooting into the air had become something of a tradition in the city, but the act was both dangerous and illegal, .“They are stupid. I’m sorry,” she said, adding “if [the bullet] hit my head, I probably wouldn’t be here.”
