'Don’t be hung up on the Pacers winning 43 games and getting swept in the first round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs,' writes columnist GreggDoyelStar.
The Pacers can be good quick if the Lakers will trade them two first-round picks for Myles Turner and Buddy HieldFor a team in the middle of a rebuild, the Pacers have an a typical level of stability in their roster.
Over the past year, they’ve added what they hope will be two long-term pieces to their backcourt, trading for Tyrese Haliburton and drafting. Another guard, Chris Duarte, is coming off of an all-rookie season, and in 22 games after a midseason trade last year, 2020 lottery pick Jalen Smith played his way from afterthought in Phoenix to signing a two-year extension to stay in Indiana. The Pacers’ first-round pick in 2015 has remained with the team from playoff seasons to its most recent teardown.
It wasn’t even a guarantee Turner would start the season in Indiana. Over the offseason, the Pacers tried to lure Phoenix center Deandre Ayton, whose presence likely would have made Turner redundant, not to mention the strain their combined contracts would have put on the salary cap. But the Suns matched the Pacers’ four-year, $133-million offer sheet and Ayton returned to the desert. And for the time being, Turner stayed in Indiana. General manager Chad Buchanan said on 1070 The Fan's"Kevin & Query" radio show Wednesday thatThursday, Pritchard declined to discuss any specifics of extension talks with Turner but said the two met the day before and spoke for over an hour.
Turner, Pritchard said, is excited to play with Haliburton, who didn’t arrive until after Turner was out for the year with a foot injury. Turner also hopes to play exclusively center this year after spending much of his career sliding between center and power forward.Pritchard proved his willingness to trade aggressively last February when he netted Haliburton and Buddy Hield in a blockbuster with Sacramento involving center Domantas Sabonis.
