Padres expected to engage representatives of outfielder Juan Soto this offseason on deal that would likely approach $500 million if consummated
“He’s a centurion,” agent Scott Boras said Wednesday. “… There may not be 100 of them in major league history. He certainly has earmarked with the early performance of his career to be that type of player.”
The reasoning supporting a deal potentially getting done soon is this: The Padres know what Soto turned down from the Nationals and ostensibly what it would take to sign him now. And as record-shattering as the deal would be for the club, it would be cheaper now than next year or the year after. And striking a deal now could give them some payroll flexibility over the next two years.
“I don’t think it’s a question of if they’ll do that,” Boras said of the Padres’ attempts to lock up Soto. “I think the question is how they’ll do that.” “The great thing is he had time to acclimate himself to there,” Boras said. “It’s not exactly a difficult market to adjust to, San Diego. I think he’s enjoyed his time there. He certainly enjoyed the competitiveness of the team.”
