Padres to wear 'City Connect' uniforms on July 8; rotation will require some juggling
Being traded can be highly disruptive to the life of a ballplayer. But Matt Beaty being sent from the Dodgers to the Padres is about as minimally invasive as such a deal comes.
The biggest change, other than going from boring blue to brilliant brown, will likely be in playing time, which is also something Beaty relishes.Beaty had primarily been a fill-in first baseman for the Dodgers, who signed Freddie Freeman earlier this month. As a utility player who also worked at the corner outfield spots and third base, Beaty led the Dodgers in pinch-hit appearances last season.
Besides a conspicuous need for outfield depth, the Padres also needed an additional left-handed bat, which Beaty provides. His ability to get on base is welcome as well. Beaty brings a .262/.333/.402 career line into 2022. He hit .270/.363/.402 in 234 plate appearances last season. That likely means Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove and Nick Martinez will start the season’s first, third and fifth games in some order.
