Mets facing elimination as Jacob deGrom takes mound in Game 2; Blake Snell pitching first postseason game since 2020 World Series; Brandon Drury at first base over Wil Myers

The Padres would love to make Saturday’s affair at Citi Field his last as a Met.

After ambushing Max Scherzer in Game 1, Padres sights are set on deGrom in an elimination game: Win and board a plane for Los Angeles and the NLDS and perhaps end deGrom’s career in Queens. The 34-year-old right-hander has maintained that he will opt out after this season, the last in the five-year, $137.5 million deal, even after a shoulder injury delayed the start of his season to Aug. 2.

This blister that dogged deGrom in his last start in a loss in Atlanta — when he struck out 11 but allowed three runs in six innings — came up more than once and each time deGrom dismissed it. “My finger feels fine,” he said. “I felt like I could have kept going in Atlanta, but it was just like, do we want to go too far where I’ve got to miss one or two with the plan of possibly pitching Wednesday ? So the extra days, like I said, I threw off the mound twice this week without any issues.”But he allowed three home runs in a game for the first time since April 2019 and has been decidedly human over his last four starts compared to his first seven back from the injured list.

The lineup deGrom will face is identical to Friday’s, save for Brandon Drury subbing in at first base and in the sixth-hole for Wil Myers, who was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
