An online vigilante group targeting suspected paedophiles faced criticism after innocent family members of the targeted man were threatened and intimidated. The group confronted the man at his home in Co Louth over the weekend, accusing him of talking to underage children and sending lewd images. A video of the confrontation was posted online, leading to threats against the man's family. The group was forced to issue a statement asking people to leave the family alone and remove the man's address from social media. However, Gardai have raised concerns about the group's methods, stating that their actions could lead to violence and jeopardize future criminal proceedings.
Gardai have raised fresh concerns at the activities of so-called paedophile hunters after an innocent family of a man confronted by vigilantes were threatened and intimidated.A video of the confrontation, where the male was confronted by the self-styled paedophile hunter group, during which he was accused of talking to underage children and sending lewd images, was posted online.
The underage children the male is accused of contacting don’t exist. They are adults from the self-styled paedophile hunter group who pretend to be children as a means of engaging potential predators in conversation online. "It is An Garda Síochána's role to investigate crime and enforce enacted legislation. Every citizen has a constitutional right to innocence until proven guilty and be subject to a human rights based criminal investigation.
"There are concerns over the legality of the actions and the manner in which such groups operate, and how they interact with their chosen targets prior to and during the arranged meeting has the potential to affect future criminal proceedings," the statement said.
