This article tells the story of Jibreen, a Palestinian shepherd in the South Hebron Hills, whose life has been deeply impacted by the presence and activities of Israeli settlers.
Jibreen (62), a Palestinian shepherd in the South Hebron Hills , says the activities of Israeli settlers make it close to impossible for him to continue living and working in the area. He recalls an incident in the 1990s when a settler arrived and erected a tent on a nearby hill. The locals contacted the police and army, but they were told the settler was having a difficult time and needed a day or two. However, after two weeks, more settlers arrived with tents, and the army secured them.
Since then, this area has become a flashpoint in a struggle that has dominated Jibreen’s life. He says Palestinian shepherds have asked the police for help, but the police have said the settlers are uncontrollable and Palestinians should move further away. This land is rugged, dotted with rocks, and hilly, with the city of Yatta and the Israeli settlements of Mitzpe Yair and Susiya visible. On the closest hill are the remains of Jibreen’s home, which was demolished by soldiers this summer. Every Saturday, a group of Israeli and international activists descend on this region to help Palestinian shepherds graze their sheep
