Mississippi has the highest fatality rate in the U.S.—and one of the highest in the world.

With its population of less than three million, this amounts to a rate of 335 deaths per 100,000 residents, or one in every 298.5 dead from the virus, according toNo other state has a death rate as high as Mississippi’s, but New Jersey and Alabama are the closest contenders at 313 and 311 per 100,000 residents, respectively.

The rate is even higher in some of Mississippi’s hardest-hit counties, such as Neshoba, where one in every 141 residents died of Covid-19, and Clarke, where it’s one in every 165. New Jersey in September to become the state with the highest death rate in the pandemic.
