Parents' agony after daughter, 3, dies from condition they say doctors should have been able to diagnose
Ryleigh Hillcoat-Bee was admitted to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in August 2021. Tests revealed she had "extraordinarily high" levels of Creatine Kinase which can indicate a muscle injury or disease but doctors suggested Ryleigh had either a chest infection or hepatitis.
Symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include muscle cramps, dark-coloured urine and feeling weak. It can be caused by electrocution, burns or a genetic condition as turned out to be the case with Ryleigh. "The family say that the available evidence should have led to the conclusion that there was a very strong possibility this was rhabdomyolysis and that should have led to a certain pathway being followed."
