The 2-year-old boy died last July.

Bethlehem police late Thursday afternoon said Stauffer and Brewster had been taken into custody in New York State. “We are making arrangements to have both defendants extradited to Pennsylvania,” police Capt. Nicholas Lechman said in an email. The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office determined the boy died of fentanyl toxicity and ruled the death a homicide.

When Stauffer woke up, the boy appeared to still be sleeping, police said. After some time, the parents realized the 2-year-old was unresponsive and his lips were turning blue, according to investigators. Investigators said they found an uncapped hypodermic needle with blood residue near the bed; loose pills, Suboxone and smoking pipes with burnt residue around the room; and a container under the bed with numerous glassine packets and a glassine packet in a trash can that also had a child’s diaper and a cupcake wrapper.
