A Florida couple faces involuntary manslaughter charges after their two-year-old daughter died tragically when a heavy suitcase was placed on top of her crib. The parents, Kodi Glenn Simon and Kateri Ann Simon, allegedly used the suitcase to prevent their daughter, Maeve Simon, from escaping her crib. Court documents indicate the parents did not intend to harm their daughter but their actions resulted in her death.

A tragic incident has unfolded in Florida , leaving a two-year-old girl dead after her parents allegedly placed a heavy suitcase on top of her crib to prevent her from escaping. Kodi Glenn Simon and Kateri Ann Simon, the parents of Maeve Simon, were taken into custody near Cleveland, Ohio, in connection with their daughter's death, which occurred in November 2022. Court documents filed this month allege that the couple caused their daughter's death 'without malice.

' The incident reportedly took place on November 26, 2022. According to charges against Kodi Simon, a former Marine Corps veteran, he placed the child in a portable crib with a foam mattress and a suitcase filled with books on top. Prosecutors argue that this conduct constituted culpable negligence, resulting in grievous bodily harm, specifically mechanical asphyxiation leading to death. A report from the Florida Department of Children and Families paints a picture of a family struggling with a young child's sleep issues. Maeve was known to frequently climb out of her crib, disrupting her room and waking her siblings. The report states that the parents attempted to confine her in a Pack N' Play, but she managed to escape from that as well. They then tried securing the Pack N' Play with a zip-on mesh top and placed the child in a sleeping bag to limit her movement, but she was still able to break free. Tragically, the Simon family experienced an unimaginable loss when they discovered their two-year-old lifeless under the heavy suitcase. The night before the heartbreaking discovery, Kodi Simon had put his three children to bed between 8:30 pm and 9 pm, hearing their toddler 'babble' for about 15 minutes before silence descended. This led him to believe she had fallen asleep. His wife returned home later that evening, and the couple retired for the night, unaware of the horror that awaited them the next morning. Upon finding their child in the Pack N' Play with the suitcase and other items crushing her neck, they immediately called the police, but it was too late; the child was pronounced dead at the hospital. A DCF investigator stated in the report: 'The parents knowingly placed items over the top of the toddler's Pack N' Play in an effort to keep her confined inside.' The report added: 'Although they were not doing it for discipline purposes, and although they were not willfully trying to harm her, their actions ultimately led to her demise.' It was noted that there had been no prior incidents concerning the welfare of their children, with the other two reportedly well looked after. Kodi Simon, who had previously admitted to child endangerment at his court martial last year, has waived extradition and is currently being moved from Ohio to Florida. Meanwhile, Kateri Simon was released on a $20,000 (€23,770) unsecured bond, according to federal records. Both parents are facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, as stated in the federal indictment.
