Parents Seek Global Help as Teen Diagnosed with Rare Motor Neurone Disease
Motor Neurone Disease, FUS Gene, Clinical Trials

A young boy's family calls for worldwide assistance after a diagnosis of a rare, aggressive form of motor neurone disease linked to the FUS gene, with a life expectancy of about a year.

Kyle, a young teenager, has been struck with an aggressive form of motor neurone disease that has upended his family's future. His journey began in February when he first noticed pain in his lower limb.

A subsequent leg limp and impaired balance led to a fracture in his hip, which was initially treated conservatively with rest. The healing of the bone did not resolve Kyle's limp; on the contrary, it worsened, prompting his parents to seek further medical advice. Throughout the next few weeks, the child endured repeated scans - covering the brain, neck, spine, hip and pelvis - and a battery of blood tests, all of which initially returned normal.

Confidence rose, travel plans to Tenerife were made, only to be shattered by the return to Temple Street Hospital for a repeat series of assessments. During a lumbar puncture at the hospital, a full genetic panel was dispatched to Germany. The results of that test were devastating: Kyle was diagnosed with a very rare variant of motor neurone disease linked to the FUS gene. The diagnosis was delivered in a brief, clinical call to the family.

The disease is incurable and life‑shortening, with a typical prognosis of roughly twelve months for such aggressive presentations. The parents immediately mobilised worldwide medical teams, including Professor Orla Hardiman, to explore any available trial drugs or novel therapies. Unfortunately, access to experimental treatments is extremely limited; clinical trials are heavily restricted and only a few patients may qualify.

Kyle's family now faces a grave reality - his life is severely limited, but amid the sorrow they are also determined to make the most of the time remaining. In addition to the medical crisis, Linda, Kyle's mother, explained that the teenager also suffers from global developmental delays, meaning he retains a childlike dependence while simultaneously displaying a vibrant love for sports and a joyful, affectionate nature that endears him to classmates, friends and community supporters alike.

The family is calling on the world for any information or resources that might either extend Kyle's lifespan or at least slow disease progression. They are organising a charity event on November sixth, with the aim of raising both funds and awareness. A heartfelt appeal for prayers, support and potential drug leads has already reached far‑reaching audiences.

The emotional impact on the family is profound; they describe it as "horrific and upsetting", yet they urge anyone who can help - whether through medical insight, donation or simply moral support - to act. Their plea is simple: any chance to prolong Kyle's life, or to keep his condition manageable, is a miracle worth striving for
