The ceremony takes place along a six kilometre stretch of the River Seine in the French capital, is scheduled to start at 6.30pm Irish time.
The opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics takes place in Paris on Friday evening, with golfer Shane Lowry and hurdler Sarah Lavin set to carry Ireland’s flag at the event.
It will be the first time ever that an Olympics opening ceremony has been held on a river rather than in a stadium and there has been major travel disruption in Paris and across France today after high-speed trains including Eurostar were hit by what the national rail company SNCF called a series of co-ordinated arson attacks, although there was no immediate evidence of a link to the Games.
