Parrott Denied Debut Goal in Betis Defeat
Troy Parrott, Real Betis, La Liga

Troy Parrott saw a goal ruled out for offside and assisted another but could not prevent Real Betis from slipping to a heavy 5-2 La Liga defeat at Levante in his first start for the Spanish club.

Troy Parrott experienced a frustrating full debut for Real Betis as his new club suffered a heavy 5-2 La Liga defeat away to Levante at the Ciutat de Valencia.

The Dublin striker thought he had opened his account for Betis in the 16th minute when he headed home, only for the linesman to raise his flag for offside, a decision confirmed by VAR review. Parrott remained heavily involved throughout the match, however, and played a key role in his side's first equaliser just after the half-hour mark.

Showing excellent determination inside the penalty area, the Ireland international retained possession despite heavy pressure from Levante defenders before laying the ball off to former Barcelona centre-back Marc Bartra, who fired a powerful effort from the edge of the box to level the scores. The game truly ignited in the closing moments of the first half under the late summer Valencian sun.

In the second minute of added time, Levante midfielder Enzo Bardeli pounced on a loose defensive pass from well inside his own half and produced a moment of spectacular technique and imagination, launching a chip from more than forty yards that caught Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles badly off his line and sailed into the net. Despite that stunning strike, Betis managed to go into the break level once again when Rodrigo Riquelme tucked in a flick-on from a corner kick.

The second half told a different story as Levante's set-piece quality proved decisive. Roger Brugue put the hosts back in front for the third time in the 56th minute, heading in from another dead-ball situation, prompting Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini to withdraw Parrott shortly afterwards. Brugue then added his second goal of the afternoon before Jon Ander Olasagasti completed the rout with a late header.

The defeat was particularly disappointing for Betis, whose fifth-place finish last season secured a long-awaited return to the Champions League. A third consecutive league win would have taken them to the top of the table, but Pellegrini's charges instead find themselves searching for answers after a chastening afternoon on the Mediterranean coast.

Parrott had only made his Betis debut three days earlier, coming off the bench in the 71st minute of a 1-0 win away to Valencia at the Mestalla, where he helped set up Pablo Garcia's late winner
