Pasadena's Gustavo Escamilla took his turn to try and guard Memorial's Robert Miller in Friday night's district contest. Miller finished with a double-double in the disappointing loss. The last time Pasadena High School's varsity boys basketball team defeated Memorial on the road, there was a coach far, far away in Palestine, likely coaching a game.

After that stint at Class 3A Westwood, the Eagles handed their new head coach his memorable first-ever 6A district win with an eruption not seen in many years. Pasadena went on a 21-0 fourth-period rampage that turned a five-point lead into a 1-1 district record, while sending the Mavs to their second consecutive defeat after opening district with a strong win over Dobie.

"We lost the game to Deer Park because they outrebounded us. I told them, if you want to win a district championship, you've got to rebound and they did that tonight. That's why we won. Kevin's going to get his boards but we need everybody. Everybody got a piece," said Cole, who watched three other players haul in five or more boards.

"Our plan was to play him straight up. We didn't double him, just be physical with him, don't give him any low paint touches. I told the guys he's D1. He's going to score some points. He did what D1s do, he put his head down and got some big points. But we weathered the storm and we had to control the boards," Cole said.

His bucket kicked off the 21-0 romp. Pasadena did give the Mavs the chance to prevent such a skid, but after Miller failed to score on a layup, the Eagles were off to the races. Jesse Hernandez scored the second and fifth buckets in the spree, while Hector Manriquez scored the third and fourth buckets, making it 68-52.
