Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe said he would like to remain in his role when Simon Harris takes over as Taoiseach.

Paschal Donohoe has insisted he did not canvass Fine Gael members to ask them to back him for leadership as he skirted around whether he “seriously considered” a bid to succeed Leo Varadkar.

“From Wednesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon was a very intense and busy time. But I ended up where I began, which is I'm very lucky to have two roles that I cherish, that mean a lot to me, that I do my very best in as a public servant. He continued to say that he has made his ambitions clear in the past. He acknowledged that following Mr Varadkar’s resignation, “lots of thought was going in from across the party regarding where they stood, what they would do, who they would vote for and where they would be”.

While he has not spoken to the incoming Taoiseach about his role, he did make a pitch to remain in place.
